This is my Mother, Sandy Appleby (circa 1945). She's the next to youngest of seven children, and was born and raised on a farm in Lexington, Ohio. In this photo she has her whole life in front of her. Who knew she would fall for a boy from Mansfield, Ohio who had just moved to Lexington. They'd Graduate in 1957 and Sandy waited 4 years for him to finish college in Vermont. They would marry in 1961 and start a family 10 months later when I was born. My sister Lynnette came along in '66 and Susan in '69. We moved from Ohio to California, back to Ohio, to Illinois and back to Ohio. As tough as it was to restart the household so many times Mom hung in there...kept the home fires burning and together Mom and Dad raised us kids. We always had a good meal on the table, clean clothes for school, help with homework and after-school activities, a shoulder to cry on, hugs, kisses and prayers...and we thank you Mom for all of that .
We are all grown now in our own homes with great jobs thanks to all that Mom (and Dad) taught us about life, love and responsibility.
There is so much more to the story of Sandy Appleby, but let me just say we are so grateful for the life she makes for all of her children and grandchildren (and great-grandson to be) and the love she shows us all.
Love you, Mom!
Moms are a wealth of wisdom. In honor of our moms this coming Mother's Day, here are some of the most important pieces of wisdom she has passed down to us:
All four American Idol judges are getting pink slips at the end of the season, according to a new report.
According to The Wrap, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and even Randy Jackson won't be asked back for next season. Longtime producer Nigel Lythgoe is getting the boot, too. And contrary to Internet rumors, Jennifer Lopez is not being asked to return. Ryan Seacrest's job appears to be safe. Idol is suffering through its worst ratings in its 12-season history.
If this is true I'll be glad to see Nicki Minaj go (she's nasty), Randy "Dawg" Jackson has seen better days and Mariah Carey, who at times seems liked she'd rather have dental surgery than sit through another night of singing amateurs, has already said she won't come back. That leaves Keith Urban whom I like. I think he gives good constructive criticism and is the least annoying of any judge in Amrican Idol history. Keep him, add harry Connick Jr. (already rumored to be joining the show) Bring back J-Lo and throw in some snooty ole Brit like Elton John or, dare I say, Simon Cowell?

If you're planning on attending a baby shower anytime soon and you are stuck for a gift idea, try making a diaper cake. If you've never seen one they are as described, a cake shaped gift made from baby diapers and accessorized with baby items.
My wife kelly has made a number of the multi-tiered diaper cakes for co-workers and relatives and they turned out beautiful. Plus the recipients have loved them. Not only are thay practical in that the mother-to-be gets a large stockpile of necessary supplies, but they are also a hand made gift from the heart.
Just last week, a baby shower was held for our daughter Sara who is expecting her first child, our first grandchild...a boy. Kelly decided that a diaper cake would be a great gift, but this one needed to be extra special and unique. Since our son-in-law is a dairy farmer she naturally shifted to cows and farm equipment.
Combining some techniques learned from online videos and images, Kelly incorporated her own ideas, color schemes, materials and personlized touches to come up with a diaper tractor complete with a wagon (store bought) filled with simulated hay and lots of gifts.
I'm very proud of her diaper tractor creation and I'm looking forward to her next crafty project.
For once we don't have to wait until the Super Bowl to see a top notch ad campaign. Just in time for the new Star Trek movie comes this new extended car commercial starring Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto!

If you’re out of work, getting a job can be a frustrating challenge. It might be even more frustrating to learn that some employers are screening job applicants by analyzing their handwriting. That’s right. Your handwriting could cost you a job.
Handwriting experts, called graphologists, claim they can determine things about a person’s personality and mental status from their handwriting. For example, words with a forward slant show an outgoing personality, while a backward slant means it was written by a shy, reserved person. Some graphologists even claim to diagnose medical conditions such as back problems just by looking at a writing sample. (Mashable.com)
Taylor Swift and American Idol judge Keith Urban are featured in this new, very poignant, video from Tim McGraw for his song "Highway Don't Care". This video carries with it a very importmant message for everyone.

I'm a sucker for sequels, especially when it comes to the onslaught of super hero films we've seen come out in the last few decades. I've seen all the Batman, Superman and Spiderman movies and Saturday morning witnessed Iron Man 3. My friends and I attended the 11:00am showing. Note to Cinemark...you may want to consider opening for business earlier than 10:45am, especially when there are over 100 of us lined up on your sidewalk waiting for you to unlock the doors and sell us some tickets.
Back to Iron Man 3. It was good...on a scale of five buckets of popcorn I'd give it four. My score is based on my opinion of the story, the effects, the suspense and whether or not it will hold up to repeated viewings. The answer is yes, this one will probably make it on my Christmas list. It will be great viewing, down the road, when my yet-to-be-born grandson eventually finds my dvd collection. Pay particular attention to the outstanding performance by Sir Ben Kingsley as the villain The Mandarin.
Marvel films have developed a tradition of treating movie goers to a little treat at the very end of their films and Iron Man 3 is no exception. The audience I was in, all of us apparently aware of this tradition, sat still through all of the credits anticipating another Marvel surprise. I won't spoil anything for you, but let me say there is a teaser scene for an upcoming film and it is fun.
Congrats to Robert Downey Jr. and crew for now being a part of the two largest box office opening weekends ever!
