I grew up in the 60's in Ohio where we had three, maybe four television channels to choose from. But on those channels there were plenty of heroes, some human and some animated, for little boys to look up to. There were Captain Kangeroo and Captain Penny ("You can fool some of the people some of the time but you can't fool Mom") Superman , both live action re-runs from the 50's and the cartoon version, Spiderman, Hercules, Thor and of course Batman and Robin. That mid-60's tv series was one of the best! But there's one that for me stands out above the rest and he hails from the far east.

Ultraman debuted in 1966 but was set in the then distant future of the 1990's in Tokyo. In Ultraman, Sinister aliens and giant monsters (actually men in refurbed Godzilla costumes) constantly threaten civilization during this period. The only Earth organization equipped to handle these disasters is the Science Special Search Party, or SSSP, a special worldwide police force equipped with high-tech weapons and vehicles, as well as extensive scientific and engineering facilities; this organization is called the Science Patrol, The Science Patrol is always ready to protect the Earth from rampaging monsters, but sometimes it finds itself outclassed. When the situation becomes desperate, Shin Hayata, the Patrol's most capable member, holds the key to salvation in the form of a power-object and artifact called the "Beta Capsule," which, whenever activated, allows him to transform secretly into the super-humanoid-powered giant from space, who becomes known to the people of Earth as Ultraman. To me Ultraman was the coolest, better than Johnny Socko's Flying Robot. I'm certain that at least one Halloween for me was spent in a store-bought Ultraman costume. I'd love to see Ultraman return on the big screen, maybe to help Superman or The Avengers battle some evil force from outerspace. A little boy can dream, can't he?
